Potatoes - import, export - where to and from
Let's remind the data from GUS regarding the export and import of potatoes in the 2023/2024 season, both in terms of volumes and values. As shown in the chart above, the past season (with a significant improvement in the export of Polish potatoes) remained typical in that both the volume and value of imports significantly outweighed the export indicators. The volume of potato imports to Poland in the 2023/2024 season was higher than the volume of potato exports to our country by 131 percent. Meanwhile, the value of imports exceeded the value of exports by 103 percent. On the other hand, the relationship between the prices of exported and imported potatoes in the discussed season looked different. In each subsequent month of the season, the export price was higher than the import price. This is also a typical phenomenon for this market. The largest difference was in September, with a staggering 1.06 PLN per kilogram, while the smallest difference was in April, only 0.16 PLN per kilogram. Below, we present a list of the largest recipients of Polish potatoes in the 2023/2024 season and their percentage share in the total Polish export in this category. - Romania: 21.8 thousand tons - Slovakia: 4.4 thousand tons - Germany: 3.9 thousand tons - Latvia: 2.7 thousand tons - United Kingdom: 2.5 thousand tons - Serbia: 2.2 thousand tons - Czech Republic: 1.5 thousand tons - Lithuania: 1.3 thousand tons - Netherlands: 1.3 thousand tons - Hungary: 1.2 thousand tons - Ireland: 1.1 thousand tons - Bulgaria: 1.1 thousand tons - Others: 3.2 thousand tons As seen, the largest recipient is Romania, and this country significantly dominates over other countries buying Polish potatoes. In the 2023/2024 season, thirteen countries imported over a thousand tons of these vegetables from Poland, which accounted for 93 percent of the total Polish potato exports. Below, we present a list of the largest potato suppliers to Poland in the 2023/2024 season and their percentage share in the total Polish export in this category. - Germany: 96.7 thousand tons - Greece: 12.0 thousand tons - Spain: 10.8 thousand tons - Egypt: 8.4 thousand tons - Cyprus: 5.5 thousand tons - Romania: 3.7 thousand tons - Denmark: 3.2 thousand tons - Sweden: 3.1 thousand tons - France: 3.1 thousand tons - Netherlands: 2.6 thousand tons - Italy: 1.5 thousand tons - Others: 4.0 thousand tons As visible, Germany was the largest potato supplier to Poland, clearly dominating in this category. In the 2023/2024 season, twelve countries delivered over a thousand tons of these vegetables to Poland, constituting 97 percent of the total Polish potato exports overall.
