Potatoes - prices continue to be under pressure from supply.
The prices of potatoes in the national wholesale market remain under pressure to decrease. However, in the recent period, this pressure has somewhat eased. To the extent that average selling prices in the wholesale market have managed to strengthen slightly. In the case of yellow and red potato varieties, as these varieties had previously been getting cheaper.
The change was not very significant, especially in the case of red potatoes. There has already been a downward correction, but overall, yellow potatoes have gained slightly, especially at the upper end of the price range. What factors influenced this? Primarily, the weather conditions. The end of August brought further weather problems, which affected current supply. But also, in the way prices are changing, it is evident that the market is experiencing issues with quality goods.
The prices of yellow and red potatoes start September at the level of 0.67-1.00 PLN/kg. White potato varieties continue to have prices in the range of 1.00-1.50 PLN/kg. Quality plays a significant role in price formation, but regional factors still have a significant impact. Generally, the cheapest potatoes remain those from the production "heartland" in the vicinity of Sieradz and Kalisz.
It is worth noting that the improvement in potato prices at the end of August brought a significant change in the assessment of the current season compared to previous years. The current average is only 2 groszy per kilogram lower than the average price from the past five years. There was a moment in August when this difference was 15 groszy/kg. If the current price were to remain for about a week, the current average would exceed the average for the past years.
