Prices of young potatoes - the downward trend has slowed down.
The weather conditions have also affected the potato market. Heatwaves and storms disrupted the harvest campaign and led to an increase in quality issues with the tubers (primarily due to a higher risk of diseases). This, in turn, influenced the prices of these vegetables in the Polish wholesale market.
However, this is not a big surprise. July often brings such weather - hot and stormy, resulting in a slowdown in the downward trend of potato prices (a trend that has a seasonal regularity).
On the contrary, it happens so often that this phenomenon can also be seen in the long-term average. Currently, prices of young potatoes in large wholesale markets are mostly in the range of 0.90-1.33 PLN/kg (0.21-0.31 EUR/kg).
This is lower compared to the previous year, but in July 2023, the potato shortage was already noticeable, and the industry knew that a season of low harvests was ahead.
Now the planting realities are different, but the weather has had its impact. This is evident, for example, from the fact that current prices are still above the average of the previous five years. It is currently +9 percent, but it could be even more as potato prices in the wholesale market are still strengthening. There are already some offers with prices of 1.50-1.67 PLN/kg (0.35-0.39 EUR/kg).
