The season of Polish red peppers has started.
Accelerated vegetation, caused by warm weather at the end of winter and early spring, resulted in an earlier start to the harvest of many domestic fruits and vegetables. Bell peppers are no exception. The season for green bell peppers started earlier (already in the first week of June) and now the season for red and yellow bell peppers harvested in domestic greenhouses is also starting earlier. Last year, green bell peppers appeared on the market only in the last decade of June.
Of course, as it is at the beginning of the harvest, the supply of Polish bell peppers from greenhouse cultivation is limited. But it seems that there will be noticeably more of them than last year soon. This is due to the faster start of the season and the fact that last year the market for warm-weather vegetables remained in a supply gap due to very unfavorable weather conditions. Weather will also be a key factor in shaping the current supply, but it is already evident that the harvest at this early stage looks better than last year.
This is also suggested by the prices of the first batches of domestic bell peppers. In small wholesale, green bell peppers are priced, depending on the location of the wholesale market and quality, from 4.00 PLN/kg to 8.00 PLN/kg. Companies usually buy them for the fresh market mostly at 4.00-6.00 PLN/kg. Last year, the prices of these bell peppers were at the level of 6.00-8.00 PLN/kg.
Red and yellow bell peppers in small wholesale are offered at 9.00-12.00 PLN/kg. The first purchase prices for these bell peppers, offered by companies sourcing them for the fresh market, are 5.00-6.00 PLN/kg. Last year, red bell peppers appeared in small wholesale only at the end of the first week of July and with prices at 7.00-11.00 PLN/kg.
