Are tomato prices low?
The prices of red tomatoes from domestic greenhouses dropped in wholesale trade in June. In large-scale wholesale, this decrease amounted to about 13-14 percent between June 6 and June 13. This refers to the average drop. The problem is that locally, these decreases were more significant. Notably, and quite unusually, tomato prices fell at Bronisze, which generally has higher prices than other parts of the country.
This time, the price drop at Bronisze was larger and more dynamic because a significant volume of these vegetables was blocked from export, resulting in a sudden influx of tomatoes into the domestic market. The supply disruption was substantial enough to impact wholesale prices in other regions of the country. Additionally, the current harvests are improving.
But were these price changes so significant that we can say Polish tomato prices are "bottoming out"? Such news appeared in industry media. It seems these descriptions were exaggerated. Yes, tomato prices were falling for several consecutive days. Locally, the drop was quite dynamic, and the trend became widespread. In fact, it may continue.
However, the reality is that the current price situation in this market is not so dire. This is evident in our chart showing the changes in the average selling price of B-sized tomatoes. As seen, the current average is not low at all. On the contrary, it is relatively good, only worse than the high price from a year ago.
Currently, the wholesale selling prices of red tomatoes are as follows: Size A 3.50-4.00 PLN/kg; Size B 3.66-4.16 PLN/kg; Size BB 3.83-4.33 PLN/kg. As mentioned above, the following days will most likely bring further price drops for domestic tomatoes. Especially if sunny weather continues. However, as long as the average price of B-sized tomatoes does not fall below 3.12 PLN/kg in June and below 3.00 PLN/kg in July, we cannot talk about low prices.
