Tomato prices are higher than in previous years.

The price situation in the large wholesale market, when it comes to the segment of red tomatoes, has remained surprisingly stable for a large part of the current season. After the typical significant price drop at the beginning, from the start of June, the prices of these vegetables fluctuated within a limited range and did not follow any medium-term trends. We can see this on our chart.

In the last decade of July and the beginning of August, we can talk about a price trough. But the chart shows that for the current campaign, this concept is very relative. Prices dropped to the lowest levels of the season, but still remained relatively high compared to previous years.

From the second week of the current month, we have seen a rise in the prices of red tomatoes. Perhaps not very dynamic, but noticeable. Sales prices (with a carton) for size B tomatoes are currently most commonly in the range of 4.16-4.50 PLN/kg (0.97-1.05 EUR/kg). This is a 37 percent increase from the lowest price at the beginning of this month and a 54 percent increase compared to the average from the previous five seasons. For several days now, this level has placed the current quotes higher than all quotes from the corresponding period of the last five years.

Generally, wholesale selling prices of red tomatoes are mostly in the range of 4.00-4.83 PLN/kg (0.93-1.13 EUR/kg), depending on the size and region of the country (it is cheapest in the greenhouse area near Kalisz). Most likely, the market for red greenhouse tomatoes has already entered the second part of the season, where the dominant phenomenon is decreasing supply and correlated long-term price increases.
